The Capital of Ukraine

Kyiv was founded 15 centuries ago and it was the capital of ancient Rus. Now it is the capital of Ukraine. There is a legend about its foundation. Once there were three brothers — Kyi, Shchek and Khoryv and they had a young sister Lybid. They founded the city on one of the hills above the Dnipro and called it Kyiv after the eldest brother.

Kyiv became one of the largest cities in Europe. The Golden Gates was the main entrance to the city. From here tourists begin their tour of Kyiv. In 1037 Yaroslav the Wise founded a new cathedral. It was named after Saint Sophia. The cathedral became the center of cultural and social life.

Kyiv of our time is a very beautiful city. There are many parks and gardens here. There are a lot of nice flowers in its streets.

Kyiv monuments of the past look well with modern builders — attractive hotels, cinemas, theaters, metro stations. There are many sights in Kyiv. The most famous of them are Kyevo-Pecherska Lavra, Golden Gates, Volodymyr’s cathedral, Andriivsky Uzviz.

Kyiv’s population is more than 3 million inhabitants. It is a big cultural centre. There are many universities, institutes, hundreds of secondary schools, the Academy of Science, the State Shevchenko’s University in Kyiv. A lot of tourists from hundred countries visit Kyiv every day. They often prefer make a trip by bus and by river-boat.

There are many museums and theatres to visit. The bridges over the Dnipro are marvelous. Khreshchatyk is not only the central, but it’s the heart of the city. The traffic is very heavy on it.
